The day after this: http://caniscioltivaltellina.it/alpine-dirt-roads-on-road-bikes/

“…Suddenly you see barriers and signs with the word finish written on them. The stage is over!… But soon you realize that the road continues, and so you go on…”

“Watch out for the witch!” – told us the guy on the sidewalk that, after overstepping us, stopped his walk, as if all of a sudden something he early forgot came to his mind, turning to us while we were filling our bidons at a fountain…

“What’” – I ask. I thought I had misunderstood.

“Are you traveling towards Carpasio?”

“Yes, why?”

“Be careful! Today there’s the “Tour of the Witch”, the road is narrow and motorcyclists like drinking”.

“Ah, a moto-meeting. Thanks for the info”.

We’ve just turned our backs to the sea at Arma di Taggia, aiming towards the inland and the mountains, on the Valle Argentina back road. Traveling through it we should shorten our return trip to the car we left the previous day in Cuneo.

We haven’t many alternatives: also with this shortcut the kilometers to ride are 180 and we’re already late.

“All those kms to shoot a video?” – somebody asked.

Deciding to go back to the car, the day after the shooting, with our bikes and through another route, was for us a logical consequence. In the end, wandering and improvising is what we like to do, anywhere.

Too much importance has given to the limits in your legs ignoring those you have in your head.

The troupe headed back home the previous evening. Only me, Fisto and Cello remained to pedal on our usual rides, less noble than those the fate gave us the previous day. The same fate that now, putting us in this situation, seems attentive to remind us what’s our place on earth: on the road improvising through the unforeseen.

In spite of everything I am happy, we go back to the usual Cani Sciolti life, bullshit life of course but where I feel at ease. We look to each other, astonished by that guy’s kindness, we finish to fill our bidons and we leave.

At the beginning the road penetrates through the mountains, with not excessive slope, looking for the depth following the sinuous bights of the Taggia torrent.

oggia+nava_04

No trace of the dreaded motorcyclist until now. Only ancient woods between which appear inaccessible and solitary hermitages or abandoned Medieval villages.

I have always had faith about these Ligurian alpine valleys, sure of the fact that these wolves’ places have always something to offer if you decide to cross them. The eye, and through it, the heart, are satisfied in front of the acts of both man and nature.

oggia+nava_06

oggia+nava_07

Just the time to put my hand on the doorknob of the mind digression, to suddenly close it in the face of the strain when the stink of burned tires  brings me from the collar and throws me back into the real world.

1. That stink comes from a flaming red “Lancia Delta” in rally attitude which, after surpassing us, it’s now ahead skidding at every road turn. It seems that not only motorcycles appreciate this road’s bends…

2. We cross the old town of Badalucco and after a turn we find ourselves dominated, almost squashed by the wall made of houses on the right side of the valley that is called Montalto. After it we’ll take the detour that will lead us to Carpasio.

oggia+nava_05

3. After the turn, the slope increases and I also begin to “feel” my backpack, slowly growing in weight. Acting like that it seems it wants to arrest my riding and stubborn as a mule it wants to stop there, paralyzing me.

It’s late autumn but it’s still really warm, I observe the beads of sweat increasing their frequency while falling from the top of my nose, as if they were an engine’s rev counter. By the way the road is quiet and not congested at all, we can pedal in peace. And that’s why we start to doubt about the warnings that guy gave us at the beginning of the climb. We start to believe that he was jeering at us. Cyclist’s paranoia?

oggia+nava_08

Meanwhile I run out of water but I know I’m not far from Carpasio, where we decided to take a break. I will fill up my bottles there.

While I enter the village the reputation of our caring guy gets restored, since the only narrow road of the village is obstructed by dozens of noisy motorcycles.

At this point, I don’t know if because I was peeved or scared by that confusion, or because of the strain and the hot weather; the fact is that I’m not enough alert and instead of crossing the town looking for a bar or a fountain, I don’t stop and I ride along the main road, getting away from that confusion, proceeding towards the Colle d’Oggia, from which the motorcyclist horde is descending.

The road is narrow and I am forced to avoid the motorbikes that often, especially on turns, ride on the wrong side of the road.

Furthermore, they address me vulgar gestures and insults. I can’t get upset because I can not even understand how can I be the one to blame, alone man on a bicycle.

oggia+nava_11

oggia+nava_09

oggia+nava_10

All of this distracts me from the real problem: I’ve run out of water! Except from some abandoned ruin I can not see any building. I take a hard look in the woods at the side of the road looking for a spring or a stream, but nothing! Only arid and dusty rocks crumbling at my glance.

I pull over and eat a banana, the most liquid thing I own. While I start thinking to this insane passion that puts me with nonchalance in these bullshit situation, my pals turn up. They stopped in Carpasio and got their bidons filled. I scrounge. We take advantage from the brake to let the buzzing, bulky, insolent, cheeky caravan disappear.

From where we are we can see the pass, Colle d’Oggia. Comforted by the view, we leave again. And so we are once more on our own. On the road, now empty but still steep, each one with its own strain. And also this time, each one in its own way, we reach the pass.

oggia+nava_13

oggia+nava_12

And so here we are… one more time, like clouds, clung to the mountain tops. I look to the towns halfway up the slope emerging from the moving fog, they look like cookies in a milk cup. I feel something difficult to explain: like something previously undefined which now gets sense.

oggia+nava_14

oggia+nava_15

And then down we go… we fly down just to land under the gothic colonnades of Pieve di Teco, the medieval town where the Colle di Nava climb begins.

In front of a pasta dish the moral rises up, but it’s only a palliative. No one wants to talk about it but we know that until know we’ve spent a lot of mental and physical energies. Similar situations come to my mind, where I thought: “It’s hard! This time it’s really hard! I don’t know if I can make it…” But I also remember that they always transform into: “I did it! I don’t know how but I did it!”

I raise my glance (I don’t know how long, stupidly, I’m staring at that square meter of asphalt spinning through my front wheel) and I see the road disappear behind a promontory. It gives me the illusion that after that turn there is a passage between the mountains.

I try not to believe that bluff; I know there’s still a lot to struggle before reaching the top. After the turn I find an almost flat straight road, at the end of which there’s a white sign with a black writing that I can not read from where I am, but it should be a two syllables word. I think: “You will not fool me…” but while I get closer the sign comes to focus and I read: “NAVA”!

At this point in my head, I don’t know why, a thought was born: “I’m in the town of Nava but the pass must be higher. Keep pedaling…”

But when ahead of me I see Cello, camera in hand and ready to immortalize the transit, I have no more doubts, I take courage and decide to believe that everything is true. I’m on te top!

What happened before, along the climb, please ask to somebody else; I’m the last to know because I have no idea…

The road that from the Colle di Nava leads to the Padana plains gradually descend on a slightly sloped surface; it’s really fluid. We could face it without problems if we hadn’t decided to use our fixed gear track bikes today. The moving of the wheels is tied to the spinning of the legs which in turn it’s tied to the rubbing of our testicles on the saddle. If using these bikes we wanted to demonstrate to have something between our legs, now every doubt has been put to flight. At this moment  I realize how stupid our choice was but anyway I have always considered arrogant and boring every presumption of intelligence.

Every now and then we stop on the side of the road to let our balls breathe and so, one piece at the time, we get closer to the end of the journey.

oggia+nava_19

DSC02264

It may also happen that our beloved road decides to not repay, throwing in your face a sign which forbids that viaduct in front of us to bicycles; and so it rejects you into that hill area where the Alps slowly thin out into the plains.

Therefore we suddenly find ourselves involved into a never ending sequence of road ups and downs, like strophe and antistrophe. The road climbs straight without caring of the grade, the backpack weighs, the legs are hard as wood, the head? It was already laying on the sofa wearing slippers, sure that after the last pass going back to the car was pure formality.

Each time we reach a top we must ride down, rewind the tape and start again…

Meanwhile, like every holy day the Lord grant us on this Earth and Cani Sciolti spend riding over it, darkness arrives. We are God knows where in the middle of the hills. Over the yellow light ray coming from a lamppost I see the oscillating contour of the hills and the farmhouses in light and dark; they look like backlighted cardboard templates.

I thank the Lord for having composed such a scenic design and for making me such an asshole for being there looking at it.

DSC02276

Sooner or later it had to come and it came: the last climb and with it the last descent, and at its bottom the Padana plains begins. We’re in Mondovì. From there, other 30km to Cuneo. We should ride them in complete darkness, on a crowded extra-urban state highway which is in fact a flat straight line. Not being with us our pal Ilaria who is a specialist and lover of the flats, we decide that we can do without it and we go to the train station to check the timetable.

We are now on a train. Sprawled on my seat I look the darkness outside the squared window as if it was a turned off TV. I’m exhausted but satisfied and in peace. This day was hard, intense, rich of unexpected situations, less or more unpleasant. We didn’t get bored at all, untidy people that we are, gifted dilettantes of the two wheels, faithful to a line that doesn’t exist: “This is truly Cani Sciolti stuff!” – I think.

But the day is not over, yet… Do you remember? We are Caniscioltivaltellina!

Once in  Cuneo we disassemble our bikes and get in the car. Other 4 hours driving await us to come back there, in that nook under the shadow of the Legnone mount, in one of the many corners of the world that is Valtellina.

After it happened to meet again that handyman who gave me my first bike, sitting outside at a bar table while drinking an orange soda (he doesn’t drink alcohol, a truly odd fact for an adult from Valtellina). From under his cap and with his usual sneer he told me: “You need to have a heart and then don’t worry about your legs ’cause they  will go without saying!… What did those chicks sing?… Yeah, one had huge tits and the other a little bit less… I got it: …Besides the legs there is much more…”.

“Come?” – gli dico. Credo di aver capito male. “Andate verso Carpasio?” “Sì, perché?”. “Fate attenzione! Fra me e me penso: ”Non ci casco…non mi freghi…” Nell’avvicinarmi la scritta viene messa a fuoco. Leggo: NAVA! Vai, continua a pedalare… “. Come strofa e controstrofa. Siamo a Mondovì.
